Safety
Celebrate safely
A happy festival is a safe festival. Please read these tips and share them with your family before you light the first cracker.
Do
- Buy crackers only from licensed sellers.
- Read the instructions on each cracker before lighting it.
- Light crackers in an open area, away from buildings, vehicles and dry leaves.
- Keep two buckets of water and sand nearby.
- Wear cotton clothes and footwear.
- Use a long incense stick (agarbatti) to light crackers.
- Keep pets indoors – loud sounds frighten them.
- Put used sparklers into a bucket of water.
Don’t
- Do not let children burst crackers without an adult.
- Do not hold a lit cracker in your hand.
- Do not relight a cracker that did not go off – pour water on it.
- Do not burst crackers near hospitals, schools or animals.
- Do not wear loose silk or synthetic clothes.
- Do not store crackers near the kitchen or electric points.
- Do not burst crackers in narrow lanes or indoors.
- Do not burst crackers during hours banned by local rules.
First aid for burns
Hold the burn under cool running water for at least 10 minutes. Do not apply ice, butter or toothpaste. Cover lightly with a clean cloth and see a doctor for anything larger than a coin.
